Photography Competition
We're excited to let you know about the launch of our newest programme for creative students and photographers - Stills!
This is a free-to-enter photography contest open to all students year 1-13. Supported by our friends at Canon, we have some great prizes for young photographers, and want to see the world through their lens.
Stills is new for 2021, but you may be familiar with some of our other programmes - Smokefreerockquest, Smokefree Tangata Beats, Showquest, Toi and Rockshop Bandquest. This year we have focused on developing a free-access platform that students can engage with safely in their bubbles - designed for today's increasingly digital learning world.
You can check out all the info and rules, and students can submit photos via the Stills website here - www.stills.nz or find us on Instagram and Facebook.
Key details:
- Free to enter
- Camera prizes from Canon - worth over $7,000!
- Open and Junior sections
- Entries open until 19th November
- Winners announced 30th November
- To inspire photographers, check out the below photography briefs:
Open categories (Y1-13):
Live
Take us where the action is - onstage, backstage, rehearsals or celebrations. We want to see your performing arts, dance, music and drama photos that capture a moment filled with life.
Hometown
My community, my people, my whakapapa. This could be portraiture, documentary style shooting or still life scenes in your home. Or take us on a locals-only tour of the sports field, sweeping rural views or busy cityscapes.
Enhanced
Show off your skills with post production editing, and transform your picture into something next level - think editorial, fun, or weird and wacky! Use an original base image (or images) as your canvas to build, draw, collage or write on.
Junior (Y1-8):
Be inspired by the Open categories, or use your imagination and go somewhere else entirely. We want to see your world through your eyes and lens.
Prizes:
- Junior 1st place - Canon EOS 1500D camera kit
- Open overall 1st place - Canon EOS 200D Mark II camera kit
- Open category winners (3x) - Canon EOS 3000D camera kit
- 2nd and 3rd place in each Junior and 3x Open categories - Canon SELPHY Square printer
If you have any questions, or want more info head over to the Stills website here - www.stills.nz or email help@stills.nz
Stills is all about the creativity, composition and story of your photo, not about how flash your camera is. Get inspired by the people and places around you, and give photo editing a go!
Hope to have you involved!

Andreas Wannerstedt
Andreas Wannerstedt is a Stockholm based artist and art director who crafts unique 3D sculptures and mesmerizing looping animations. The imagery of Andreas is both sophisticated and whimsical, featuring simple and playful geometric shapes in balanced compositions, together with organic textures and harmonizing color palettes. His perfectly synchronised animations has often been described as “oddly satisfying”, since the overall effect evokes a strangely hypnotizing feeling which makes the viewer relaxed and even meditative. Although his animations are vaguely based on real world behaviours, they often break the boundaries of tolerances, friction and gravity, enabling endless motions of the cleanest order.

TE REO HOTUNUI O TE MOANA-NUI-A-KIWA
Te Reo Hotunui o Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa, the Pacific Islands Memorial represents New Zealand’s enduring friendship with the Pacific Islands and the service of Pacific Islanders who fought for New Zealand in the two World Wars and later conflicts. The design depicts a bronze conch shell, a symbol deeply rooted in Pacific cultures, which features a patina finish with remembrance poppies.
The design by artist Michel Tuffery MNZM and Herriot, Melhuish and O’Neil Architects was selected by an expert judging panel following a national design competition. Named Te Reo Hotunui o Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa – The Deep Sigh of the Pacific, it recalls the conch shell left in the Arras Tunnels by Kuki Airani (Cook Island) soldiers of The New Zealand tunnelling Company and the New Zealand (Māori) Pioneer Battalion, who were stationed beneath the town of Arras during 1916 to 1918.
